Step 1: Find your comfy place. Pick a place and time when you will be able to fully relax, and will not be interrupted. Think of this as your “Happy Place”, “Zen Spot”, or whatever you want to think of it as.


Step 2: Get comfortable. Be sure your pick for your relaxation zone is comfortable. Think of a giant bean bag chair in a dim room, or a yoga mat in the garden.


Step 3: Focus on your breathing. Tell yourself when to breathe in, and when to breathe out. Be sure to feel and be aware of your breathing. Think of all the fresh oxygen you are breathing.


Step 4: Don’t be afraid to let your mind wander. Constantly busy minds are not used to downtime. Let your mind think through this downtime, then return your focus to your breathing. Think those thoughts, it is natural, so don’t fight them.


Step 5: Timing matters, but how much time varies for everyone. Aim for an interval that works best for you. Be sure to use a timer to prevent constant time checking. Think 5 minutes is too long, but 3 minutes works best? Go for it if it works for you.


Step 6: Practice pays off. Change won’t happen overnight, but it will happen with practice. Make meditation a habit to allow for those changes to begin. Think more about the benefits of the habit over the changes.


Focus on being mindful and using meditation to help you relax and be in control, no matter the situation. Your body AND mind will thank you, by functioning better!
